I am a sole practitioner, with a practice devoted exclusively to family law. For more than 27 years, I have handled all aspects of family law for clients in several New Jersey counties.

Covid changed a lot of aspects of family law. The Court continues to conduct most family law events electronically, through Zoom or Teams. Documents and filing fees are not mailed or sent by delivery persons. Documents and court fees are submitted to courts through an electronic delivery system through the New Jersey Judiciary official website.

Because so much of family law is done virtually, many family law lawyers have changed how they operate their practices since 2020. I am one of those lawyers. I maintain an office in Sparta, New Jersey in Sussex County, but I conduct almost all business with my clients virtually. We speak on the phone, sometimes on FaceTime, or we meet on Zoom. Our written communications are through email. We meet in person on the rare occasion when a judge requires us to physically appear in his or her courtroom.

There are advantages to doing things the post-Covid way. Clients no longer must travel to lawyers’ offices to consult or sign documents. When I must witness a signature, the witnessing is done on Zoom or FaceTime. Less time physically spent in lawyers’ offices and in courtrooms saves the lawyers and the clients considerable time. It also saves the clients substantial attorney fees.
